December Mechanical
- December 7
- Did more work in the cab area over the weekend.
- It was easier to take the preselector gear column out and service it as well as take all the old paint off.
- The steering column was easier to get to as well.
- I'm learning how this thing works and some of the things needed attention anyway.
- I have learnt a few ways of doing things quicker, cheaper and better so when I do the Leyland I can put them into practice.
- Just as well this is a hobby because if I was doing it up to sell Bill Gates wouldn't be able to afford it. LOL
- Here is the preselector column all greased up and ready to paint before going back in.
- There is a hole in the bottom of the column which holds a bearing.
- It was dry as a bone which I found curious because this like some other parts in the bus has normally heaps of grease.
- There was grease in there it was really hard and old.
- Conversation
- Norman Julian You can see in this picture the preselector column attached to the steering column.
- Mark Spencer Preselector?? Does it work with a clutch?
- Mark Spencer Actually I'm not sure what you mean by preselector!
- Mark Ellery you put it in to the next gear and to select it you operate the clutch, i.e. select first, to engage depress the clutch n release, when moving shift to second, prior to when you need it, when you need it operate the clutch
- Norman Julian Not a clutch Mark. More like a switch. Closer to a semi auto than a clutch, but not that either. Just imagine a vehicle that is one gear ahead of what you are in. In other words start in neutral place the gear lever in first without touching the switch...See More
- Mark Ellery The origional ones had a clutch pedal, they were the pre war paddle shift or straight shift in car racing between the wars and post the wars, race cars like the ERA's and Rileys had them, sounds like the bus had a updated actuator modernised for the role.
- Norman Julian I was writing a reply to Mark Spencer and yours went out before mine did Mark Ellery.
- Norman Julian I wish it was an auto because there isn't much room for my long legs. I pity the poor bus drivers back in the old days with long legs. LOL
- Norman Julian I have been toying with the idea about moving the pedals further forward. This is one of the reason for pulling the old girl apart.
- Mark Ellery Norman I have never seen the switch version, have driven clutch pedal operated ones and they were very good, I understand that they are still used in ultra heavy lift n transport vehicles, love to have a look at yours mate it has come along in leaps n bounds.
- Mark Ellery It appears the pedals are on their own frame so provided the angles work it may be possible.
- Norman Julian I'm not familiar with the system you are talking about Mark. It could very well be the same. I was wrapped across the knuckles once when I referred it to being a clutch. LOL
- Garth Taylor Is the hand brake the wind up type Norm?
- Norman Julian The same as on Chitty LOL
