This is as far as I am concerned the most over-engineered thing I have ever seen.
You can see here I have repacked this area with grease.
Under the grease is a bearing. There is one on both sides. The whole thing moves probably no more than 90 degrees if that.
Very strange.

The weather is a bit crappy so I'm doing this air cylinder.
It is a secondary tank for the jacknife doors.
When I was cleaning it up I was looking at the way it was assembled and welded.
I'm of the opinion that this is not an off the shelf unit like you would buy in a shop.
The welding of it is not the type of finish I would expect from a shop bought unit.
More than likely it was either a modified unit from a bigger tank or more than likely the front and back ends were bought from other sources and the unit was made on site.
We used to make cylinders in this country many, many years ago.

Tank came up OK.
I thought the regulator may have been made of brass so I polished it up.
Looks like new

Started stripping everything out today that is going to be in the way for the eventual painting of the chassis.

A few more things done.
I pulled apart the pedal mechanism.
I have decided now to take all the pedals and levers connected to them out.
The only things that will be staying in the bus are the gearbox, diff and engine.

No wonder she wouldn't hold air.
This was facing down on a flat piece of metal with a clamp holding the whole lot.
Only thing was the clamp wasn't tight anymore and I think friction played a role in this.
Sitting flat Carl it wasn't letting out as much air as the hole would suggest.
I wont repair this I will replace it.
There are clamps now ligned with rubber.
This shouldn't happen again.

Fuel Lines
These are the fuel lines.
There is one missing.
I left it on.
Look how many repairs over the years.
I found 3 more holes that have worn through.
Most of the clamps were far to tight and crushed some of the pipes.
There was no insulation at all.
These buses are no smooth thing.
There are leaf springs with no dampers, so you can imagine the ride.
This all contributes I guess to all these repairs done over the years.

This is what you do when you get up at 5 a.m. in the morning after a scorcher the day before.
Clean up a filter. Here is the air filter down to the basics after a good clean.
The old sealing washer on the left looks like it may have been a flat washer and was just placed in position and squeezed to the shape when the main body was put back on and bolted up.
I didn't have one but this fly gauze fits perfectly.
On the left of the picture you can see the main body on it's side. The raised section around the body just next to the bolt holes compress down on the rubber for a good seal.
I cut the gauze to fit and put it in the slot.
I will take it apart and put some gaskit goo around the join if I think it will work.
You can also see the new bands clamped up.

This was something I was concerned about.
These bands are made of brass and so trying to put them back on they of course broke.
I have stainless hose clamps but I'm a little suspicious so I made new bands from aluminium and used the old brass nut and bolts.

There is a little wear but nothing to be concerned about.

The secondary air tank for the doors has been given a freshen up.

The air compressor is nice and clean.
