The weather is crappy so more shed jobs to do. I was going to remake this engine cover because it is so heavy, but have decided to repair it.
I will re-skin it and put struts on. I have over the years seen people struggle to lift it because it is in an awkward place to lift it up.
I have struggled as well. I have to be careful because it looks like it is filled with asbestos.
Garth Taylor
That could well be correct, anything to lower the cab noise.
The AEC Regals I drove in the mid 60s all had thick padded covers over the engine cover to try to keep the ear damaging noise down a bit.
Norman Julian
Asbestos was mainly used to disperse heat.
Though it would have helped with noise.

The engine cover down to the basics.
Took longer to take out the asbestos and clean up the dust than to actually take it apart.
Some might say why take it apart.
Well if you keep looking the frame is damage and bent in a few areas and the top skin has dings and damage on the side as well.
It wont be to hard to replace the skin.
Not sure yet what will take the place of the asbestos.

Can I suggest insulating wool.
Robert John Hood
Insulwool is fine but it needs to be covered with foil.
Norman Julian
Needs to be heat proof. There is stuff that is both and about 10mm thick.

Nothing is ever straight forward with this job.
I was given another swivel latch which is connected to a rod on either side to latch the engine cover, but the replacement has it's holes in a different place, so I think it will be less troublesome to take the rod connectors off the chrome one and put on the original.
I have had to deal with either end of the cover as well the hollow tube which the end catches are screwed to need raising so the brackets sit up.
Hard to explain I'm affraid.

Because someone had taken this rod system away and I don't have one anymore I borrowed this one from the Leyland only to find that it is too short.
It got me thinking how cramped I was sitting in the drivers seat of the Leyland and remembered that I didn't feel that way in the AEC.
Well when I measured from the front window back to the bulk head where the drivers seat is attached there was a difference of 60mm with the AEC having the extra space, so I wasn't imagining things.
The more I look at these 2 buses the more different they really are.
Norman Julian I will use the end swivel rods only.
The rods in the middle have a thread on either end so I will make longer arms to suit this cover.

Norman Julian These latches are similar to what they used to use on fire doors and were called Panic Bolts. Norman Julian I had to take both ends off here because I needed to flatten the end with the reinforcing plate piece with the holes in it. When the hatch isn't closed right and the arms are fully closed they hit the sides of the frame and collapse the frame. 15 March at 15:58 .. The end rod brackets are now sitting flush on the frame. New rods have been cut and threaded to the right length. The frame has now straight edges. Because the handle here is all that is seen the rest will be just painted. The handle is actually in reality on the other side of where it is now.
