Welders

Norman Julian 11 Nov
I should pay homage to the welder that has built this trolly and restored numerous cars and tonnes of welding on this resto.
Maxwell Mcroberts
beats my little CIG Compact 2 ARC
Norman Julian
Compact 2 welders are about 30 years old now

Well I bit the bullet and bought this today. Hopefully all my aluminium woes will be solved.
Peter Velthuis
Nice Norman.
My dream machine.
Greg Gibson
What gas did you get?
Peter Velthuis
He would have gone for laughing gas lol.
Feral Pigeon
Peter Velthuis Doesn't laughing gas (AKA nitrous oxide) make your car go a lot faster ?
Norman Julian
Argon
Greg Gibson
Yep argon is the go.
You want speed shield for mig
Norman Julian
They said you can weld aluminium foil with this.
I immediately said " why would you". LOL.
Greg Scott
Fantastic norm please post some before and after shots of the results I'm very interested. !
Marea Julian
I'm glad he bought it, he was arguing with himself for weeks!

I'm a quick study!
I have already worked out where the on and off switch is.
Norman Julian
I am going to do the easier job first.
Make a trolley for the machine and the bottle.
They want $350 for a shop bought one.
Carle Gregory
hehehe i find that ironic that they are selling a trolley to some one that wants to weld
Greg Scott
Weld up the tig trolley with the mig ! Lol
Norman Julian
How did you know! LOL

Andrew Blacklock

Some of you are probably saying what has a welder got anything to do with this restoration.
To me it is a very important part of this resto because a great deal of this bus and the next is aluminium and most of the parts are complex shapes that need repairing in some way or form.
Finding a welder [person] to do the necessary work is hard and when you do they either don't care to do the work, too busy to do the work or can't do it and when you do they charge you like a wounded bull.
This type of welding is very difficult because the old aluminium is very thin and in most cases very oxidised.
I decided to finally get one but a lot of questions were asked and advise given by my next door neighbour.
This is a variable pulse and amperage machine that will help with the varying degree of oxidation of the old aluminium. Another reason for buying it is that I want to do it myself at my leisure and in my own way.

The best tools for the job always cost more and that's because they do the job properly.
I do the same when buying electronics test equipment.

I made a start on the Buddy Holley yesterday.
Because I'm old I made the top of this trolley high enough that I don't have to bend over too far to see the dials to adjust.
You will have to excuse the messy bench.
It is a workshop afterall.
The welder will sit on top with a shelf at the bottom to carry all the normal rubbish.
The space at the back will carry the gas bottle.
It is only tack welded at the moment.

Hardware

Norman Julian 16 Nov
I had this delivered today from the states.
7 lbs of brass screws.
No metric in this lot, all imperial. Shame I couldn't get them from here.
Because I believe in period restos it was a bonus that these are slot head.
Finding specific suppliers of these types of brass screws isn't easy.
Steve Maher
If you had asked I could have put you on to a guy here in Sydney
Peter Velthuis
You telling me he screwed up.
Norman Julian
No comment
Feral Pigeon
None of that metric rubbish, thank you, be a crime to put them in a British bus.
Norman Julian
True that!
