Off topic I know but does anyone know the height from road to roof of the Leyland/AEC/Albion deckers?
I need to know each one if they are different.
David Oaten
14 foot 4 inches for the Deckers
Brian Blunt
That was painted inside the cabs
David Oaten
Yes in every Bus all 14'4""
Catherine Norman
4.4 metres roughly I'm guessing
David Oaten
Or 4.4 metres
Catherine Norman
I'm stuck between modern and old measurements
Catherine Norman
Make sure you leave room above in the shed to work on the roof of the bus Norm lol
Norman Julian
It will be 5 metre to the gutter so add another 1/2 metre at the pitch so at least a metre to work with.
Brian Blunt
That was the maximum allowed
Norman Julian
The reason I asked is because the sliding doors on this proposed shed are 4.45 metres high which is borderline.
If there is a concrete slab to contend with it wont be high enough.
Stuart Gale
also allow a bit for terrain... if the approach to the door has any kind of incline from the outside as the nose drops the back end can raise up a bit... had a similar problem in a depot after the approaches to the sheds were altered.. 1st bus to go in ended up with added ventilation in the roof...
Norman Julian
Level block pad.
Norman Julian
15 or so years ago I levelled an area of 40 metres x 60 metres.
Carle Gregory
checked my online converter and it says 14.3 ft is 4.358 mtrs
Catherine Norman
Always stated as 4.4 metres to allow a margin Carle in case of low bridges etc
Carle Gregory
no worries, always good to have a margin
Norman Julian
Thanks everyone. That will help with the final analysis.
James Leonard Garrod
I raised the roof on my large carport to get trucks into my backyard.
I was servicing a local church bus (trying to gain brownie points with the big guy upstairs) and the flamin' thing would only jack up so far.
I started swearin' at my cheap shit jack then noticed a creaking sound from the roofing metal.
Uh, Duh!
Bret J Bistowski
mines close to 15' with beefy military tires.
Garth Taylor
The Volvo deckers I drive are rated at 4.4m or 14'4".
The previous Leylands and a London MCW in the fleet all the same height measurements

Looking at sheds today and what some companies can get away with is truly amazing.
When I built my shed years ago the footings had to go down a minimum of 800mm.
In the case of my big shed it had to go down 2.1m to get below the reclaimed soil.
I spoke to one company and they don't even have footings, you just bolt it down onto the concrete slab.
This is a 5 metre to the gutter line shed.
They say they meet the engineering requirements.
I'm sure they would be a cheaper shed but I reckon and doubt whether I would want to risk it.
Alan Routh
Yes i noticed when looking every thing is just basically dyna bolted. Structurally rated to conditions
Sam Hawkins
Could it be that today's lighter, stronger materials don't need the same grounding as the previous generations of materials & designs?
Norman Julian
That was just one company Sam.
There was another that does it with the footings I described.
Andrew Blacklock
my shed has small concrete footings with she mountings concreted into them.
I peered my slab on the high side to my neighbours ground level to.

When I built this carport back at the turn of the century, it cost me the same amount of money as a steel kit of 6m x 6m x 2.4m which was 3k.
This one is 10 x 10 x 4m.
I just went to a truss and frame business and bought the trusses that were made the wrong size for a house.
I got them cheap.
The 8 footings for each post which are 100mm x 100mm posts go down 1 metre.
Each footing has a cradle of steel made up.
I made this carport for the AEC
Alan Routh
Very nice.
Good idea too, never thought of that.
I still need to knock down and rebuild my shed. Its drier out in the rain that in the shed lol
Norman Julian
I only needed this another 500mm higher and I could house a decker.
Norman Julian
Those trusses I got for $35 each.
Normally they at the time were $150.00 each.
Stuart Brown
Very nice... my council make some of this method difficult... Dammit!
James Leonard Garrod
Does it require Council Approval?
If so, have the rules changed since you built the last one in the Jurassic era?
I've found a Bottle of Scotch in the Town Planners bottom desk drawer does wonders....
Norman Julian
My property is classified "Semi Rural".
There was no council approval needed as long as there is no power to the structure.
Carle Gregory
what no power!! thats a bugger and were you gunna plug radio, power tools in?
Norman Julian
There is however power coming from it in the form of solar panels.
Norman Julian 30 Jun
WOW!
Got the first quote back today for the shed I want built.
Alan Routh
15k plus?
Catherine Norman
How devastating was it Norm I'm guessing a mortgage is in order
Norman Julian
Hey Alan you need to come into the 21st century. LOL
Catherine Norman
50K plus
Norman Julian
Your closer Cath!
Alan Routh
Including concrete 30k
Catherine Norman
62k
Andrew Blacklock
concrete is usually the same cost as shed
Norman Julian
This shed is 10m wide. 15m deep and 5m to the gutter.
Norman Julian
I have 2 more quotes to get yet.
Catherine Norman
You'll find the differences interesting Norm some of it relates to the need for scaffolding being quite a tall shed
Norman Julian
Gutter height makes a huge difference in price.
Alan Routh
Plus the roller door. Over 2.7 becomes "industrial" so about 1k per door
Catherine Norman
I know living in a strata block we have found that adds to the cost that and the concrete costs
Norman Julian
No roller doors now Alan Routh
Norman Julian
2 steel doors 4.45 high and 4.80 wide.
I will have to check that height.
Chris Dempsey
Two shipping containers one either side a concrete slab in the middle and a roof would make a great big arse shed Norm
