2018
Building February
- Norman Julian 5th Feb
- She's going up at last
- Phil Belak
- That is awesome.
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- You could switch your passion to building light aircraft - any room for a runway?
- The ground conditions look ideal for that!
- Jim Sharp
- I told you you could use my crane
- Norman Julian
- Can just imagine the cost just to get it here
- Norman Julian
- Never thought of that! LOL
- Peter Livermore
- New spot to park my tow trucks
- Charles Shipway
- Looking good won’t be long now lock up will arrive and Norman you are allowed to go into shock have a coffee break sitting on A revolving chair
- So you have the opportunity to take one last look at your new empty shed and please don’t forget your camera to show us how good it looks lm looking forward to seeing these photos
- Norman Julian 5th Feb
- Not as big as Bunnings but will do!
- Andrew Blacklock
- looking good mate
- Brian King
- Be good to see it finished eh Norm
- Jim Sharp
- It won't be big enough
- Norman Julian
- Have to get the buses in yet.
- David Wilson
- you get all of Bunning's tool range as a free bonus. They told me
- Norman Julian
- We can still put a leanto on either side David Wilson for 2 more deckers. LOL.
- David Wilson
- Ooooh - sounds interesting
- Anthony Christie
- Jealous.
- Norman Julian
- You wouldn't be of the cost
- Maxwell Mcroberts
- if u build it they will come
- Norman Julian 6th Feb
- Todays progress.
- I spoke to the builder and he assures me there will be at least 150mm or 6 inches of clearance between the top of the roof of the decker and the roller door when fully open.
- Urs Mueller
- That's a Shed.!!!!!!
- David Griffiths
- Measure twice cut once!
- Norman Julian
- If there are issues the roller door in the middle can be raised.
- Plenty of room to go up in the middle
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- If not, flat tyres or dig channels to enable entry!
- Graeme Knappick
- Excellent!
- Norman Julian
- Roof goes on tomorrow!
- Graeme Knappick
- Double excellent!
- Norman Julian 7th Feb
- Day 4 of the build.
- No roof as I said yesterday just finishing off extra perlins, trimmers and internal walls.
- I have made a change.
- The P.A. door I was going to put between the bus area and the workshop area will be changed to a 2.4 metre roller door. Much cheaper than a double door.
- I changed my mind about the single door thinking if I have something wide I can't get it into the workshop area.
- Phil Belak
- Comitment there.
- I guess you’ll be charging for bus rides soon.
- Norman Julian
- If anyone is wondering the roller doors are 3.4 metres wide.
- Norman Julian 8th Feb
- Day 5:
- Not much to show for a full days work but I can see the roller door slides and brackets are up as well as the workshop wall and roller door brackets.
- Robert Bothwell
- Make a nice house for someone!
- Stuart Gale
- green as a govo frog with envy norm ! would love a shed that big to hide all of my toys !!
- Norman Julian 9th Feb
- Nothing done today.
- They are ready to sheet.
- It was blowy today so just as well.
- I took this photo so as to give you the scale against the bus.
- There is about 1.5 metres between each one when parked and about a metre off the side wall.
- That is ample room.
- Back and front there is about 2 metres either end.
- David Wilson
- it's not big enough
- Norman Julian
- Sorry David
- Norman Julian
- They are closer than that under the carport
- Greg Gibson
- That's not a shed it's a factory!!
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- I’m planning on sending you a couple more buses since you’ve got such a Grand place... shipping will be about six weeks which should be about right for timing!
- Norman Julian
- That's a fine looking machine!
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- Edinburgh preserves bus.
- Seem to remember coachwork by Windover, not sure.
- I can find out.
- It’s a Daimler with Gardner engine.
- As a lad I went to school either by tram (ceased 1956) and on these - interior coachwork is just beautiful.
- You can probably find them on the net but if you want more info I can easily get it.
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- If you can send me an email address I can send more super photos, I can’t get this system to load more than one at a time..
- Norman Julian
- projectp76@hotmail.com
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- I’ve sent some photos - hope they are on your email.
- Norman Julian
- You're the one with a bloody castle.
- Pull out a few walls LOL
- David Wilson
- Leylands only
- Norman Julian
- What about the AEC?
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- There are another 8 living within the walls.
- I’ve room for ten buses in the gardens (7acres) but they watch my every move.
- I’m lucky to be able to keep my wee grey Fergy and taxi in the place, they won’t tolerate the lorry! Bloomin’ snobs!
- Norman Julian
- Simply love the accent.
- Norman Julian
- What's the car there in the foreground?
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- Norman Julian it’s a friend’s taxi under resto
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- My ‘77 Austin FX4.
- They’re rare now but the late ‘90s ‘Fairways’ are still plenty, used as private cars.
- Selling at prices from £500 to £5000 gbp.
- Mostly auto with 2.7 Nissan engine.
- Far more driveable than the early Austin (started production ‘58, ended all FX4s in ‘97.
- Just now sales are starting of the EV (electric) from the LEVC (london electric) at nearly £60k.
- It doesn’t make sense. ... if you invest that kind of money in a business where competition is less fierce you might succeed but London cabbies now have to compete with unregulated Uber drivers who have no ‘Knowledge’. They just work off SatNav.
- A cabbie (who takes 4 years to get his Knowledge Certificate) can rent a 2005 TX cab for £300 per week and he has his fuel costs, maybe £150 per week but with a loan for the EV and reduced fuel costs, he has to make £700 per week before starting to pay himself.
- (Plus annual insurance at £5000 and maintenance).
- So he has to be in the driver’s seat 10 hours a day.
- Six or Seven days.
- Madness.
- The only objection to the old taxis like mine is emissions.
- They’re good for a million miles and more.
- Norman Julian
- It wasn't so long ago if you wanted to buy a cab you wouldn't have much change from $300k.
- It was their retirement.
- Now you have these uber drivers who basically pay nothing up front.
- Not understanding that at all.
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- It’s a difficult one this.
- The Uber system is market forces at work - undeniable, provides loads of employment especially for immigrants.
- Being mostly young and pretty desperate they work hard and learn quickly.
- So in a way it’s sensible.
- But there are many reports of incompetent driving, and much worse -rapes etc.
- Black cab drivers are now very threatened.
- Charles Shipway
- The shed goes together similar to a Bus body.
- don’t you recon
- Norman Julian
- I guess it does mate. Never looked at it like that
- Norman Julian 12th Feb
- Day 6:
- The sheeting has started.
- I'm happy with the size of my workshop.
- I have the option of putting a second level.
- Carle Gregory
- nice dog house Norm
- Brian King
- it would be good shed to put a water tank on it Norm .
- maybe 2 tanks eh with that size
- Norman Julian
- It will happen Brian.
- Norman Julian
- Looking at a 30,000 litre
- Brian King
- will you be able to pipe it back to the house too ?
- Norman Julian
- That's the plan.
- Norman Julian 13th Feb
- Day 7:
- Just the internal wall to do and then the roof.
- Now that the main roller door runners are up, I measured the door stopper which is at the top that the door stops going any further up to down to the bottom to the concrete and it measures 4.550 metres.
- Robert Bothwell
- Looks substantial with the wall cladding on.
- Carle Gregory
- is 4.5 mtrs tall enough?
- Greg Gibson
- Looks like a rural fire station
- Norman Julian
- The maximum height for any vehicle is 4.400mm Carl.
- It says in the cabin 14ft 2 inches which elates to 4.315 mm.
- This bus is 50mm shorter than the Post War buses which is 14ft 4 inches or 4.370mm.
- The wheels on this bus are 100mm in dia smaller than the ones on the frogs so if anything there is more room to get in. I'm not sure whether this bus has smaller wheels by the era it came out or whether someone put them on and I'm not sure whether the size in the cabin takes that into account.
- John Clarke
- I seem to remember 13'4'' written in the cabs Newcastle Leylands
- Norman Julian
- John that may have been the low bridge type.
- They did have them early in the peace.
- Charles Shipway
- Well Norman my father had a saying some of the important things in life don’t always come about quickly BUT when they arrive you appreciate them more looking good
- Andrew Blacklock
- awesome shed mate
- Robert Bothwell

- David Wilson
- was 14'4" - prewar buses like 1635 were 14'2".Lowbridge double deckers were 13'6"
- Anton Frank
- Looks huge what rating is it ?
- Norman Julian
- Can't easily understand these plans and specs but in the old days a shed wind rating in this area was W33.
- Not sure these days.
- Norman Julian
- It has VR45m/s and Vsit,B 39 m/s.
- Do you know what that means old buddy?
- Anton Frank
- Looking good Norman
- Norman Julian
- I'm in Region A
- Anton Frank
- Have you got room for a hoist, handy for old guys like us..
- Norman Julian
- What type of hoist.
- Engine hoist or car lifting hoist?
- Anton Frank
- Car, two or four poster.
- Norman Julian
- Bugger off!
- No cars allowed in this shed.
- Anton Frank
- Norman Julian
- Don't you give me the "Frown"!
- Anton Frank
- Norman Julian
- Bloody wind came up today just as they were about to lay the first roofing sheet.
- Anton Frank
- Those sheets could power the QE2. ..
- Norman Julian
- Huh!!!!!!
- Anton Frank
- As sails Buddy sails ..
- Norman Julian
- OK! Silly me! Hehehe
- Peter Livermore
- Looking great Norman
- Norman Julian
- You can park your big mother in this shed Peter!
- LOL
- Joshua Crook
- Looking good Norman
- Norman Julian 16th Feb
- I haven't reported much progress on the shed mainly because the last 2 days they never showed.
- This is not new by the way.
- I guess it's a sign of the times.
- Anyway, this is Wednesdays efforts, the back section as far as their concerned is finished.
- The side access door is up and half the roof is meshed.
- Peter Velthuis
- Lock up stage will be 2019 sometime.
- Norman Julian
- Don't even joke about that
- Stuart Brown
- You should get them to put aircell insulation under the roof sheets.
- Makes a huge difference both hot and cold
- Norman Julian
- Stuart Brown
- Peter Velthuis
- Always a step ahead. Lol.
- Norman Julian
- I originally was going to just use sisal but changed my mind.
- I have to keep the buses warm in the winter Peter Velthuis because I don't have blankets big enough.
- Mark Ellery
- Ever heard of knitting
- Norman Julian
- Idiot!
- Norman Julian 18th Feb
- I ordered the water tank today.
- Just as well because I have to wait 3 weeks.
- Norman Julian 21st Feb
- Update on the shed.
- Monday they got the guttering up and started the internal wall.
- Tuesday they finished the internal wall and got the internal workshop roller door working before the huge storm came that finished their day.
- With the storm came bad winds that continued today till around 11.00 am.
- So no starting on the roof.
- Lets hope something happens tomorrow.
- Norman Julian
- This roller door is on the opposite wall to the bench which goes out into the bus area.
- Brian King
- Thanks for the update
- Norman Julian
- This is the northern wall which will have 2 large windows with a 6 metre long work bench in front of them.
- Norman Julian
- Just before it got dark I measured where the outside bottom of the roll of the roller door to the floor because the stopper at the top can give you a false reading.
- The bottom of the door to the concrete actually measures 4470.
- Cutting it fine I think.
- There is enough room so I will get him to raise the brackets 30mm.
- Anton Frank
- Easier than letting air out of your tyres.
- Norman Julian
- Exactly. 4500 is the magic figure.
- Any d/decker will go in then.
- Don Allitt
- Intresting, the side frame runners are opposite way around to the sheds I have done electrical in.
- Norman Julian
- If you are talking about the horizontal wall girts Don Allitt then they are "Z" not "U" shaped like others may have been.
- Don Allitt
- Ok thanks a lot closer together than the V/U shape.
- Is Z shape for strong winds.
- Norman Julian
- To be honest I'm not sure.
- Don Allitt
- Yes, found out wind braceing the panels.
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- In the light of today’s grim weather here, do you ever get heavy snowfall?
- Or gales?
- It’s a very large building and would be vulnerable to storm damage here.
- Norman Julian
- Standards are different everywhere Gregor.
- The area here is in the low category.
- We do get storms as does everywhere else.
- With winds that can be sometimes high so you do have to allow for that.
- Don Allitt
- I showed the photos Norman put up to a shed builder I do electrical for and he said it looks to be built to the standard
- ie high wind area.
- Joshua Cox
- I am so incredibly jealous Norm :P
- I'd love a shed like this but I don't think my landlord would be happy if I built one in the apartment car park
- Charles Shipway
- Looking good won’t be long now lock up will arrive and Norman you are allowed to go into shock have a coffee break sitting on A revolving chair So you have the opportunity to take one last look at your new empty shed and please don’t forget your camera to show us how good it looks lm looking forward to seeing these photos
- Norman Julian
- Will do Charles Shipway.
- Norman Julian 22nd Feb
- Well we have almost half the roof done.
- The other 2 roller doors are up and the front roof trim is done.
- Starting to look like an almost finished shed.
- Norman Julian
- This is the roof insulation Stuart Brown
- Norman Julian
- Each door is 3.4 metres wide.
- Each bus is 2430mm wide so just under 500mm each side clearance for driving in and out.
- Stuart Brown
- Heaps of room
- Catherine Norman
- When finished Norman send to Ingleside we could do with one lol
- Norman Julian
- Can only house 3 buses so no good for you Catherine Norman.
- Scott Wilson
- And a "P" or 2 !
- Norman Julian
- No cars are allowed
- Philip Tumber
- I'm jealous, I want one
- Adrian Spencer
- A motel for the bus enthusiasts norm, maybe you will turn the back room into a cottage LOL
- Norman Julian 28 Feb
- My daughter just sent me this.
- A bit dark but it looks finished.
- Greg Gibson
- You will need to get yourself a scissor lift now
- John Lidstone
- wow!
- Chris Dempsey
- Should got your daughter to stick 1635 inside for you
- Charles Shipway
- You little ripper Norman One hurdle crossed you must feel relieved go ahead and ENJOY it finishing those Buses one day
