The first start up

When was last time started ?
Norman Julian
About 20 years
If you have a look at the start of this video after the engine has started you will see fibres flying around.
That is what is left of the fan belt.
Later on after this video had finished I found what was left of the belt.
There is suppose to be 2 belts but the remains of one was all I found .
When I run it I only have it going for short spurts because of that.
John Lidstone
remarkable start for a Leyland so long idle - more worthy of an AEC.
Sounds a tad tired with the same 'heavy' (and very loud) tone I found on several rather tired O.600-engined Routemasers, but I can hear sweet gearbox music there......
Must be a joy to you to hear it run again.
Once it warms slightly it sounds better.
Nice even exhaust note.
Those pre-selector Leylands are sweet sounding.
Norman Julian
The tired sound as you describe it is probably suited because of how it looks and its age.
I haven't been around these engines as long as you or others so I'm not trained in the finer arts of engine condition, all I know is to me it is heaven.
John Lidstone
it sounds remarkably good given its condition :)
I tended to find a good Leyland would have a better top end speed than an AEC, but the AEC would invariably be better on hills.
Both have their qualities.
The Leyland particularly does not like sustained periods of top-end speed running and in UK many failures have and are occurring with O.600s when they're driven long distances on fast roads to events.
In stop-start, local town conditions, the Leyland was exemplary for reliability.
They could be darned noisy in the cab when a bit tired.
Good wishes for your project - two contrasting chassis each with their qualities and sounds.
The Leyland coupled to the pre-selector gearbox is my favourite postwar Leyland sound: the Sydney Museum's 2761 was an aural feast of exceptional delight to me.
Norman Julian
Did you ever drive a Leyland post war with a crash box John Lidstone?
I have been looking at one recently.
John Lidstone
Norman
yes I drove a PMT OPD2.
Very very (very) heavy steering, gearbox OK.
Lee Hall
Sounds just like mine did.
I was worried about it hunting at idle but that's normal haha
