December Mechanical
- Norman Julian 16 Dec
- I have worked on a few engines over the years but never anything like this.
- Oh well you wont learn anything if you don't have a go.
- The engine needs a replacement head gasket.
- I have been told that there are at least 2 broken head bolts.
- I like challenges!
- Ben Summers
- Sounds like a big task, Norman Julian.
- Good luck buddy!
- Andrew Blacklock
- Got headgasket?
- Norman Julian
- I have a headgasket.
- I will compare the old one with the spare and get another one made.
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- And room for a hoist and SAVE YOUR BACK
- Norman Julian 18 Dec
- I was told there maybe 2 head bolts broken and I think there is though I am not familiar with the location or the amount of headbolts there are but it looks like there are plenty.
- So far I have cleaned around all the others of years of dust and dirt.
- Now I have saturated each bolt pot with soluble oil or penetrating oil .
- Hopefully that will loosen things up a bit.
- There are lots of other things I can do in the mean time like taking off and cleaning the fuel filter which I have done twice before and taking apart the Autovac (that box thingy in the third photo on the right).
- Norman Julian
- What a chore getting these things off.
- Mainly the locations of the mounting bolts.
- Norman Julian
- Engine cover off and tappet cover practically fell off.
- Inside was black but not cruddy as I would have suspected.
- Tappet cover gasket is poor.
- Taking the cast pipe and rubber hose to the radiator off was trouble free only thing is was the crud inside.
- Robert Stevenson
- Nice and clean rocker cover.
- Way cleaner than anyone would expect from something of its vintage.
- Maybe recoed not long before it was retired?
- Norman Julian
- Here is a question for you.
- Does anyone know what that black container is on the upper right of the front of the bus, and more importantly what it does?
- Jim Sharp A container for rum for cold days
- Norman Julian Good answer but wrong!
- Anthony Christie
- Vacuum tank?
- Norman Julian
- Yes!
- It is a vaccum fuel pump!
- When primed it uses vacuum from the fuel tank to this devise and then the fuel uses gravity to the injector pump.
- In my situation when a bus has been sitting around for a long time and not sure what the fuel tank is like you can put fresh fuel in this and use it for starting the engine and it will run for around 6kms.
- Marcus Allaway
- Norman Julian empty tank and put e10 in say 1/8th let it soak a few days shake and drain
- Gregor Neil Robertson
- A great system as long as you’ve got a well sealed vacuum!
