Because the steps for the lower section are not ready to pick up yet I am temporarily moving on to this which is best described as the metal banister of the rear staircase.
It is really ordinary and I would really love to start again but this job has me moving back into bad habits of wanting to renew things.
There have been lots of things I have renewed on this bus because I have had to.
This though I am going to repair.
If I replace too many things it won't be what it was and I didn't want that to happen with this bus.
With the AEC Regal I went berserk and renewed more than half and I said I wouldn't do it with this but there has been so much damage and rust that I pushed aside what I originally wanted, so with this section at least I'm going to repair so let's see how it goes.
You can see with the photos there are poor repairs done to cover rust areas.
There is also lots of bog which is covered by green paint.

What the he'll is this!
Greg Scott
Looks like a front guard to me norm lol
Gregor Neil Robertson
Oh dear!
You’ll lose sleep over that but you’ll work it out over time.

William Murdoch
Keep it up, Norman. The final product will look amazing!
David Wilson
you going to try and weld a patch in that Norm?
Norman Julian
Not really sure what I'm going to do yet.
I have a few ideas.

I got the call today to say that the lower half of the staircase is done so I can put aside the banister section for now.
I put the very bottom verticle section of the step in position to show you the angle.
All 4 verticles are different sizes and different angles to follow the wall.
The old frame was a help in measurements etc to a point but it didn't butt up against the wall flush so had to do minor adjustments so it would be more accurate.

Steve Hartnell
I would hate to add up all the receipts for this lovely restoration.
Norman Julian
Steve Hartnell you really wouldn't want to know at this stage!

After nearly 2 weeks of atrocious weather, I was able to get back into the second half of this staircase.
It only took less than an hour to weld it up.
Still have to get the reinforcing angle for the sides that give it the strength to weld on and one more step🤣🤣🤣 closer to getting this behind me.
This section is just sitting here to see how it fits.
I got the sizes and angles cut right for the back wall right that slopes inwards.
They fit perfectly. Very happy.

Stuart Brown
That all looks a bit flash now...
Norman Julian
Stuart Brown no flashing covered with bitumen paint here!
LOL

Great work Norman

This section has been changed a little and ready to go back in.
I'm not reinforcing the sides with bulky side box sections because I don't think it is necessary.
The original material used was around 1.2mm thick.
This is 1.5mm and will handle the stress quite comfortably.
The sides as long as they are kept rigid and straight and not allowed to move will be strong enough.
The sides will be hard up against the back wall on one side and the banister section on the other.
These buses as I have mentioned many times were over engineered, so I'm confident that this will be OK.

Can't say I'm not happy to be at this stage.
Only the metal side panel or bannister to do now.
The wooden treads are yet to be screwed down but at least now I can easily get to the top deck.

Peter Hewat
