Norms Restoration of 1939 Leyland TD5 [1635]
2025
Mechanical July
Norman Julian 4 July
Today was a nice day so I did a little work on the front end here.
I did some work ages ago after taking the radiator out but didn't finish it.
When I put the radiator back in I didn't want to go back and do anything there.
The area where the radiator sits on the chassis on the drivers side is very corroded, but not bad enough to do any major work.
I have now treated this area with rust converter 3 times so as to get everywhere I cannot easily see and get to.
Tomorrow I will paint around this area and then put the radiator back in so as to free up some bench space.
I did take off all the bolts and inspected each one and was amazed at the condition of them.
Pictured is a typical one, which I put through the wire wheel and then just cleaned the threads of the nut and bolt using the tap and die.
Considering this vehicle is near enough to 86 years old, I'm amazed at their condition.
All up I did 12 bolts and they were all the same. Now this bus is good compared to the Leyland 31 seater I have.
90% of the bolts in the same area where all but rust dust.
My advice to anyone out there looking at a project, do some research into where they went after decommissioning.
The 31 seater is about 14 years younger than this bus.
