The Preservation of 1937 Leyland TS7 [Waddington built ex Sydney 1389]
2021
Body March
- Norman Julian 2nd Mar
- Yesterday and today I spent time in taking out this number roll housing from the Leyland 31 seater and modifying it to fit this much older Leyland.
- It was stripped of all its parts.
- The frame itself was stripped of rust and paint.
- It was then rust treated overnight and this morning it was painted.
- Tomorrow I will finish it and put it back in the roof section and put back on the bus to work out how the destination box will work.
- Norman Julian
- I cut these notches out.
- These are for lining the numbers up inside the bus when changing the number of the route.
- The number itself has these arrows and you just lign them up.
- Cory John
- Top Job !
- Julian Mathieson
- Coming along very nicely.
- Adrian Spencer
- Are you using the electric bath treatment with these items
- Norman Julian
- Admin
- Adrian Spencer
- just stripped and painted.
- Andrew Blacklock
- Sandblasting would work!
- Terry Davis
- Hi Norm great photos as always.
- Do have 1 of these badges that used to be on the radiator of esrly Leylands ?, if not & you'd like it I'll give it to you.
- Norman Julian
- Terry Davis that's a beauty!
- Thankyou buddy.
- It will look good on this radiator.
- Terry Davis
- Norman Julian That will be my small contribution to your restoration as long as it painted in WBBS colours!!!!!!! no I'm only joking, let me know how to get it to you.
Norman Julian 3rd Mar
I welded a steel plate in each corner and tapped it to take 1/4" bolts.
Most buses I have seen use nuts and bolts to secure this and that is a bad idea because once this panel is in place you can't get to the nuts to secure them while taking the screw off.

- This number holding panel is a trap for the uninitiated.
- It has to be slightly offset to allow for the springs down one side of the knurled aluminium rollers you can see.
- The plastic or calico numbers have to sit exactly in the channel with the "V" cut out on either side.

- Hi Norm where was that 409 service ?
- Norman Julian
- Brian King Hurstone Park to Rookwood Cemetery mostly!
- Brian King
- why did they have 400 series numbers Norm ?
- In Newcastle they were Industrial routes
- Norman Julian
- Brian King
- Wilson David
- can answer that one.
- I read it once but not up with the specifics!
- Brian King
- Norman Julian
- okay who is he and where is he
- Norman Julian
- Brian King
- it's actually David Wilson but for some reason this tablet turned his name round the wrong way.
- David has knowledge on buses and their history that surpasses most.
- Brian King
- Okay thanks Norm
- Norman Julian
- Brian King
- I was just telling my better half about what I just said and she fixed it for me.
- He is now known as David Wilson.
- David Wilson
- love it
- Terry Davis
- As usual great photos, just love to see them.
- You sure are doing a fantastic job.
- Keep up the good work.
- Do you wish to have that Leyland badge for your radiator?
- If so just let me where to send it, like l said it would be my small contribution to your bus.
- Adrian Spencer
- See if I get this right Norm, the system you are working on, is off the other leyland, and once you have it built you are going to copy these parts?
- Norman Julian
- This part is pretty common to most buses from the early days. I borrowed the Leyland 2818 31 seater to use on this bus because it didn't have one.
- Adrian Spencer
- Have you another to rebuild or is it total re-manufacture for 2818.
- Norman Julian
- I now have to get 2 for 2818 and another for the front of this one.
- The museum has plenty and I can get some off them.
- Adrian Spencer
- Thanks for clarifying the situation
- Norman Julian
- Adrian Spencer pleasure!
- Charles Shipway
- Norman Julian things are happening thanks again for the updates
- Rodney Amphlett
- The 409 was a half cab stomping ground for sure.
- Nice work.
- Graham Inskip
- Rookwood Cemetery.

- Sorry for some of the reflective light pictures.
- I placed this roof section back into position so as to see how it looks.
- I can now take measurements and work out how the destination box will go.
- I have consulted with a person who knows more than I about these buses and even he was a little confused on how this rear section should be.
- Most have the protruding number box like this but most others seem to have a protruding desto box as well.
- All evidence to me when I took this apart led me to believe that this desto sits flat.
- After considerable research a few photos were found of designs of buses that had flat destos.
- The inside of this bus also led me to believe that someone went beserk with a hammer.
- The whole panel fitting this roof section was gone and the bottom half of the number panel was hammered over.
- Anyway, this design pleases me greatly. The last photo has the old box next to the new.
- You can see the way one section was treated.
- By taking off the desto box which carries the desto rolls and mechanism that works it you can panel over the entire section.
- A guess suggests that its second owner did it. For what reason I don't know.
- Cory John
- Pristine Calico!
- Norman Julian
- Cory John
- actually these rolls are either ripped or faded.
- I would like another 15 to finish all the buses.
- I despise the plastic ones.
- Cory John
- Silly question but could a good screen printer do copies ?
- Norman Julian
- . . . as I have shown you before this is how most were!
- Norman Julian 7th Mar
- This will be the last thing I do on this for a while.
- I have to check out SBM and get some ideas on how the halfcab from that period was done.
- Here though I finished off the number box by cutting a piece of glass to the right size and putting special surround rubber on it to seal it and finishing it off with a aluminium frame to hold it all together.
- The other shot shows the destination front panel with some of the mechanical for the operation of the scroll.
- I might go back to working on 2547, it has been a good while since I did anything on that.
- If you are not a member of that group than you can send a request.
- I'm doing this on my phone because the main internet has been down since Saturday morning.
